In a significant policy shift, Australian health insurers will begin offering rebates for a range of natural therapies, including Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Shiatsu, Naturopathy, Western herbal medicine, and the Alexander Technique, starting early 2026.
This change follows legislative amendments allowing these therapies to be covered under private health insurance for the treatment of health conditions or as part of health management programs.

Private Healthcare Australia (PHA) has announced that health funds are collaborating with industry associations to develop accreditation, claims, and other necessary processes to support this inclusion. With the assistance of professional associations, these processes are expected to be in place by early 2026.

It's important to note that the coverage of these therapies will be contingent upon their use in treating health conditions or under a health management program, rather than solely for fitness purposes. This distinction ensures that the therapies are utilised in a manner that contributes to the overall health and wellbeing of policyholders.

For fitness professionals specialising in these modalities, this development presents an opportunity to align their services with health management programs, potentially expanding their client base and integrating more closely with the healthcare system. However, practitioners should stay informed about the forthcoming accreditation requirements and ensure compliance to be eligible for inclusion under health insurance coverage.

This policy change reflects a growing recognition of the role that natural therapies can play in preventive health and the management of chronic conditions. By incorporating these services into health insurance coverage, insurers aim to provide more holistic health solutions to their members, promoting overall wellbeing and potentially reducing long-term healthcare costs.
