Life Insurance Code Update Highlights the Importance of Clear Claims Support

Why communication, policy design and regular cover reviews matter for Australian households

Life Insurance Code Update Highlights the Importance of Clear Claims Support?w=400

The latest update from the Life Insurance Code monitoring framework has again placed customer experience at the centre of Australia's life insurance conversation.
While the sector continues to work through sustainability, affordability and product design challenges, the practical issue for policyholders is simpler: when someone makes a claim, they need clear communication, realistic timeframes and fair treatment at a stressful moment.

The Life Insurance Code of Practice sets standards for how participating insurers deal with customers across applications, underwriting, policy changes, complaints and claims. Recent compliance reporting suggests insurers are still being tested in areas such as keeping customers informed, requesting information efficiently and supporting people who may be vulnerable because of illness, grief, disability or financial pressure.

For households, this matters because life insurance is not only about the benefit amount shown on a policy schedule. The value of cover also depends on how well the insurer explains exclusions, how consistently it applies definitions, and how smoothly a claim can move from lodgement to decision. Delays or unclear requests can add emotional and financial pressure, particularly where a family is relying on death cover, total and permanent disability cover or income protection payments to keep bills under control.

This update also builds on earlier attention around delayed income protection claims, a topic that remains important for anyone who depends on their income to meet mortgage, rent, childcare or debt commitments. Income protection can be valuable, but waiting periods, benefit periods, offsets and medical evidence requirements can all affect the experience at claim time.

The key takeaway is not that consumers should avoid cover. Rather, Australians should treat claims service as part of the buying decision, alongside price and benefit levels. A cheaper premium may not be the best outcome if the policy has restrictive definitions, limited flexibility or confusing claims steps. Likewise, cover inside superannuation can be useful, but members should understand whether default insurance is enough for their family's debts and living costs.

Before taking out or changing a policy, it is worth checking three things: what events are covered, what exclusions apply, and what evidence would be needed if a claim were made. People with dependants, mortgages, business responsibilities or variable income should also review whether their sum insured still reflects current obligations.

For anyone unsure how to interpret policy wording or compare different structures, speaking with a licensed adviser can help turn broad product information into a decision that better reflects personal circumstances. The Code update is a reminder that good life insurance is not just about having cover in place; it is about having cover that can respond when it is needed most.

While the figures cover the wider insurance market rather than farms alone, the themes are highly relevant for agricultural businesses dealing with storm damage, fire losses, machinery failures, fencing repairs or interrupted operations. - read more
