For life insurance customers, the issue is not whether technology is good or bad.
It is whether faster systems are being used in ways that remain fair, explainable and properly supervised.

Life insurers already rely on data when assessing applications, pricing premiums and reviewing claims. Automation can make parts of this process quicker, particularly where an application is straightforward and the information supplied is complete. In some cases, customers may receive an indicative decision sooner than they would through a fully manual process.

The concern is that automated tools can also magnify mistakes. If a system draws on incomplete health, occupation or lifestyle information, an applicant may face a loading, exclusion or declined cover without clearly understanding why. In claims handling, poor automation can create frustration if documents are misread, follow-up requests are repeated, or a vulnerable claimant is pushed through a rigid process without enough human judgement.

For Australian households, the practical lesson is to treat speed as only one part of value. When comparing cover, it remains important to look beyond the quoted premium and ask how the insurer explains underwriting decisions, policy exclusions, waiting periods and claims requirements. A cheaper policy may not be the best fit if the wording is difficult to understand or if key risks are carved out.

There are several steps consumers can take as automation becomes more common:

  • Provide accurate and complete information when applying, especially around medical history, income, occupation and hazardous activities.
  • Keep copies of application answers, policy documents and any insurer correspondence.
  • Ask for the reason if cover is declined, deferred, loaded or issued with an exclusion.
  • Review whether existing cover still reflects debts, dependants, income and future family costs.
  • Use tools to estimate the level of cover needed before focusing on price alone.

This development also extends a broader theme already visible across life insurance regulation: better outcomes depend on clear communication, accountable systems and meaningful support when customers are making high-stakes decisions. Technology may improve efficiency, but it does not remove the need for insurers to treat people as individuals, particularly when health issues, grief or financial stress are involved.

The best approach for consumers is to stay engaged. Check how your policy works, understand what evidence may be required at claim time, and revisit your cover after major life events such as taking on a mortgage, having children, changing jobs or separating. In a more automated market, informed customers are better placed to challenge errors and choose cover that genuinely protects their family.
